Objectives of the Course |
Students will explore the developments in American poetry with representative poems. The course will achieve the goal of helping students map the trajectory of classical and modern American poetry. Above all, students discover the excitement of poetry, and come to understand the broader questions of language of poetry, interrelationship between imagination and culture as well as literature. |

In advance of this course, students must take Introduction into American Literature (3rd class course) and pass it. |
Recommended Optional Programme Components |
The participants are expected to have read, [ the “suggested books” section below; from 1 to 4] and -if needed- listen and watch the materials distributed to them. Students are also expected to make their own extensive research (using only course material for papers and exams will not be accepted) particularly about the poems and of their themes, styles and of motifs so that a productive atmosphere of discussion can be realized in the courses. |
Course Contents |
The course covers the development of American Poetry from Colonial times to Modern Period and it focuses on the specific and prominent poets, (introduction and discussion of) poems, the cultural, political, and the social atmosphere in which the works were produced in general. |

In order to reduce the cost of the text books, open access digital materials will be greatly used. In place of anthologies, digital materials and sources will be greatly used. If students consider obtaining books for this course, it is recommended that it must be done for the purpose of increasing the wealth of their personal libraries.
