Objectives of the Course
The aim of this course is taught in the fruit and vegetables, garden plants flower structure, pollination and fertilization status and practice by introducing the solution of problems related to transfer of fruit to provide context.

Course Contents
General introduction and terminology of the fertilization biology of horticulture, the flower structure of flowering horticultural plants, pollination and fertilization, main stages of before and after fertilization for the yield and fruit quality, seeded and seedless fruit production, self-compatibility/incompatibility and sterility, the most suitable combinations of main and pollinizer cultivars, problems caused by defect of fertilization biology, preparation techniques and laboratory equipments used in the fertilization biology experiments to be considered in the selection of students to be aware of.

1In the horticultural plants, sporophyte (2n) and gametophyte (n) stages, flower structure and sexual segregation within inflorescences of species.
2Mechanism of the flower bud formation. Floral induction, floral initiation and floral bud development stages.
3Self-pollination and cross-pollination, development of the female and male gametes, artificial pollination.
4Fertilization, double fertilization, endosperm development, effective pollination period and its significance for fruit set.
5Flowering times, the factors affecting these period, dichogamy and its mechanism.
6Choosing of the pollinizer cultivars, xenia and metaxeni, fertilization biology of important horticultural species and its pollinizer. Difference between insect and wind pollination.
7Sexual incompatibility of horticulture, incompatibility families and species, its physiology, sporophytic and gametophytic incompatibility.
8Parthenocarpy, apomixis, polyembryony and nucellar embryony.
9Midterm exam
10The stages from pollination to fertilization and fruit set. Embryo development stages and embryo abortions.
11Abnormal flowers and sterility.
12Determination of the pollen quality, in-vitro germination and viability tests.
13Preparation techniques and laboratory equipments used in the fertilization biology experiments.
14Final exam
