Objectives of the Course
Acquiring the knowledge of literary works, their qualities and becoming familiar with the themes, motivations, styles, motifs, arguments and counter arguments of the fictional and nonfictional works of the period, students are expected to have a close insight on the values directing the course of the 19th Century English literature and culture.

Learning Outcomes
1Knows what 19th century English Literature is and which period it covers.
2Have the knowledge about the authors and literary genres of English Literature.
3Able to analyze the literary genres of the period stylistically and thematically.
4Able to write qualified introductory and critical essays by making connections between poets-authors and their works.
5Able to evaluate the qualified studies done about the literary works of the period.

Prerequisites and co-requisities
In advance of this course, students must take 17th Century English Literature and pass it. Either simultaneously or in advance of this course, students must take the course of 19th Century English Novel.
Recommended Optional Programme Components
The students are responsible to read and examine the primary sources and course material (both hardcopy and softcopy) distributed before classes.
Course Contents
The course covers the Victorian era with its literary/textual works as well as cultural, political and intellectual developments. The course focuses on the leading prose writers, essayists, novelists, poets and their primary works that formed the intellectual atmosphere of the period and has had a considerable impact on today’s world since then, well into the present age.
