Objectives of the Course
This course aims to analyze the conceptual basis of civil society as well as the foundational motives and forms of civil society organizations and social movements in different periods. Within this framework, first the theoretical explanations on civil society will be explored and the historical development of different civil society organizations will be analyzed. The relationship between the development of these civil society organizations and the economic, social and cultural problems, such as increasing poverty, restrictions on freedom of speech, ethnic identities and women’s rights, will be investigated. The increase in the number of civil society organizations especially after 1980s will be analyzed with respect to the globalization process and the social movements in urban and rural areas will be studied in terms of their interest areas and practices.

The theoretical and philosophical basis of civil society; the interest areas of civil society organizations in different periods, the relationship between globalization civil society organizations; relationship between state and civil society organizations in Turkey; the state of civil society organizations in Turkey and their interest areas; civil society organizations on environmental issues; civil society organizations on women’s rights; civil society organizations on religious and ethnic issues; civil society organizations against globalization; civil society organizations and social movements in rural areas; trade-unions and organizations of professions; urban social movements.
